8-year-old Beaten to Death by Stepmother using Wooden Rolling Pin; Father’s Trial Declared Mistrial by Judge

A mistrial has been declared for the father of an 8-year-old girl who tragically lost her life due to a brutal attack with a rolling pin.

Cledir Barros is facing allegations of negligence in relation to his daughter’s tragic passing. In January, Sayra Barros tragically lost her life due to a brutal attack by her stepmother, Natiela Barros, who used a wooden rolling pin as a weapon.

The father and stepmother were both initially charged with murder and she has yet to go to trial. During the trial, the charges of second-degree murder against Cledir Barros were dropped. He is now awaiting a verdict on charges of child cruelty.

The jury reconvened in the Gwinnett courtroom on Monday following the conclusion of closing arguments and three hours of deliberations last week.

According to prosecutors, Barros allegedly failed to adequately safeguard his daughter from his wife. According to reports, Barros decided to remove Sayra from school and entrusted her care to her stepmother. Tragically, it has been revealed that there were previous instances of abuse within the household.

The defense claimed that the father’s frequent absence due to his job as a truck driver made him unaware of the ongoing abuse.

The jury repeatedly notified the judge of their inability to reach a unanimous decision as reported by WSB-TV News

Channel 2’s Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson was present in the courtroom on Monday, as the jury reviewed body camera footage and listened to 911 calls once more.

“It is the law that a unanimous verdict is required,” Judge Karen Beyers told the jury. “Each juror should listen to other jurors with the disposition to be convinced by them.”
