A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to a minimum of two years in prison for causing serious harm to his 7-day-old daughter’s skull in 2023.
Kade Michael Jones, a resident of Firth, was handed a 12-year prison sentence by Judge Bruce Pickett of the 7th District. However, he will be eligible for parole after serving just two years.
In April, Jones admitted to committing a serious act of violence. The incident, which took place in May 2023, involved him striking his infant child in the face, resulting in a severe head injury.
The case was handled by Bingham County Prosecuting Attorney Ryan W. Jolley, who
The recommended sentence is six years fixed and nine years indeterminate, resulting in a unified sentence of 15 years. Jones’ lawyer asked for a probationary sentence.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Pickett decided to hand down a 12-year sentence, with two of those years being mandatory.
According to police records, Jones initially provided a different explanation for the victim’s injury, stating that her 2-year-old sibling had accidentally kicked her. However, during a police interview in May 2023, Jones admitted that he had been frustrated with the victim’s crying on March 8.
Jones claimed that the volume of the baby’s cries escalated, prompting him to deliver a slap to the left side of her head. Jones claimed to be unaware of the reason behind his assault on the victim, attributing it to a state of “sensory overload.”
Jones reported that he examined the victim for any signs of bruising, but did not observe any as reported by Idaho State Journal.
The victim was subsequently transported to the hospital, where a physician concluded that she needed to be transferred to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City. According to authorities, there was swelling on the left side of her head near the ear.
