A man in Michigan was killed on Christmas Eve, allegedly while trying to rescue a dog from abuse.
Police reported that Robert Cavanaugh, 60, was discovered unresponsive on the ground in a residential neighborhood in Madison Heights, Mich., on the evening of Dec. 24. Officers took him to a local hospital, where he was declared deceased.
Police reported the arrest of 68-year-old Rodney Beasley in relation to the homicide.
The family reports that when Cavanaugh, referred to as “Bobby” during the fundraiser, attempted to step in, he was reportedly attacked with a pipe by the man. Residents shared with Fox 2 news that the “animal enthusiast” had been stepping in to attempt to save a dog from being harmed.
Authorities have refrained from confirming specifics about the reported incident, referencing the ongoing investigation; they informed Fox 2 that claims regarding an attempt to rescue a dog are being looked into.
Bobby was incredibly kind and always ready to lend a hand to the community without expecting anything in return. “He poured his heart into everything,” his family shared in the fundraising appeal, noting that he “always contributed whenever possible, especially to all animals.”
Madison Heights police have confirmed to PEOPLE that Beasley is charged with assault involving a dangerous weapon.
