Honk News – A babysitter is under scrutiny for a child abuse allegation following a harrowing incident where a 4-year-old came close to death after an attack by two dogs, according to the King and Queen County Sheriff’s Office on Friday.
Authorities responded to a residence in the Walkerton vicinity at approximately 2 p.m. on December 13 following reports of a child being attacked by a dog.
The Sheriff’s Office reported, “When deputies arrived, medics were already on the scene and treating the victim and transported the victim to the hospital.”
A 4-year-old boy suffered significant lacerations and puncture wounds across much of his body, according to the sheriff’s office. The injuries were first deemed to be life-threatening.
“The child has recovered but remains hospitalized at this time,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
On Wednesday, Mary Lynn Sowards, the homeowner and babysitter, was taken into custody and faces a felony charge related to child abuse and neglect. She is currently free on bond and is scheduled for arraignment on January 6.
“Additional charges are pending, and the case remains under investigation by the King and Queen County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Division, Animal Control Division, and the King and Queen County Department of Social Services,” the Sheriff’s Office said on Friday.

Two dogs, a German Shepherd and a Catahoula, have been apprehended and transported to the local animal shelter.
“Both dogs are expected to be processed for court action, deeming them dangerous dogs,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
