$1.8 Million to Woman who was seriously Injured in Crash by City Employee in Sacramento

Sacramento, CA: A lady whose vehicle was struck by a driver employed by the city of Sacramento in 2018 has been awarded a settlement of $1.58 million by the city of Sacramento.

According to the allegations made in the case that was submitted to the Sacramento County Superior Court in 2019, Ocean Van Tran, who had previously worked for the Department of Public Works, was operating a public vehicle in the middle of the city and ran a red.

According to the lawsuit, Chenelle Thomas was pulled over on October 29, 2018, at the junction of 16th Street and Q Street respectively. As soon as the light turned green, Thomas went through the junction. However, he was hit by Tran, who had run the red light and was coming from the opposite direction.

There were “significant injuries” as a result of the incident, according to the lawsuit.

An attempt to obtain a statement from the city’s spokesperson, Tim Swanson, was not immediately met with a response.

According to the city employee roster that The Sacramento Bee obtained through a request under the California Public Records Act, Tran, who had previously worked as an associate civil engineer for the Public Works Department, has not been employed by the city since at least the year 2022.

It was put on the city’s website earlier this month after the city had signed the settlement agreement for $1,585,000 the previous month. In response to a request from Mayor Darrell Steinberg, the city began publishing all settlement agreements online in 2021. This was done to increase openness.
