Honk News (Linn County, IA) – A 37-year-old mother from Iowa faces serious allegations of orchestrating a scheme to blame her husband for her own shooting and subsequently leaving her two young children, including one with special medical needs, on the side of a busy street, telling them that nobody loved them.
Heather Ann Perez Miranda has been taken into custody in Linn County and is now confronting multiple charges, including two counts related to neglect or abandonment of a dependent, two counts of child endangerment, one count of domestic abuse assault, and one count of false reporting of an indictable offense.
The two children that Perez Miranda is accused of abandoning in Hiawatha were aged 6 and 8 years old. The older child is said to have a “congenital deformity to her mouth/jaw area” and has undergone a tracheostomy, resulting in her inability to care for herself.
Although the individuals affected are not biologically linked to Perez Miranda, she does have four other children with their father, the same man she is alleged to have attempted to implicate. It has been reported that the four children were in the vehicle with Perez Miranda at the time she supposedly left the two victims behind.
A criminal complaint reveals that on June 30, 2024, officers from the Hiawatha Police Department were dispatched to a situation involving two young children found alone on the roadside near the 4000 block of Tower Terrace Road.
When first responders reached the location, they found the children, who informed the authorities that Perez Miranda had abandoned them and departed.

According to the complaint, the children claimed that their mother, the defendant, abandoned them by the roadside after instructing them to exit the truck she was operating, stating that nobody cared for them. “The children were abandoned on Tower Terrace Road, a bustling city street, and close to I-380, leaving them vulnerable to risks or threats.”
Reports indicate that the location where the children were left behind is approximately eight miles away from their residence.
During a conversation with the father of the children, he allegedly stated that he had an altercation with Perez Miranda earlier that day, during which she struck him in the face. Following this incident, he departed from their residence and checked into a hotel, leaving Perez Miranda alone with their four children and the two victims.
Perez Miranda allegedly informed authorities that she left the children with her partner at a nearby camping location. Nevertheless, the footage captured by surveillance cameras and the accounts from witnesses reportedly conflicted with her narrative. In September 2024, she faced arrest and was charged with endangering a child and neglect.
Prior to her arrest, Perez Miranda reportedly misled law enforcement, claiming that the father of her children was responsible for her shooting.
On August 28, 2024, Perez Miranda informed deputies from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office that while she was in a camper at Morgan Creek Park, her husband shot her in the midsection.
Despite Perez Miranda sustaining a gunshot wound, investigators have allegedly concluded that her account does not correspond with the bullet’s path, which traveled through the lower left side of her abdomen and exited the camper.
Furthermore, authorities indicated they could establish that when Perez Miranda was shot, her spouse was with their children at another site, with surveillance footage verifying his location. Last month, records indicate that she was taken into custody and faced charges for making a false report.
