PETOSKEY, Mich. — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Emmet County, warning residents to prepare for snow, gusty winds, and hazardous travel conditions beginning Friday afternoon and continuing into early Saturday morning.
Advisory Details
The alert, issued at 2:45 a.m. Friday, is in effect from 4 p.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday (EST). Forecasters say the area could receive 2 to 4 inches of snow, with winds gusting up to 35 mph expected to create blowing and drifting snow across open areas.
“Plan on slippery road conditions,” the NWS cautioned. “The combination of gusty winds and falling snow will lead to blowing snow and very low visibilities. Hazardous driving conditions are expected and could impact the evening commute.”
Travel and Visibility Concerns
Motorists are advised to slow down, allow extra time, and use caution while traveling, especially on rural or untreated roads. The mix of falling and blowing snow may rapidly reduce visibility, making travel challenging during the evening and overnight hours.
Residents are also urged to use caution on sidewalks, stairs, and driveways, as freezing temperatures may create slippery surfaces.
Lake Effect Variability
The NWS noted that weather conditions may change quickly across short distances during periods of lake effect snow, with some areas experiencing intense snow bands while others remain relatively dry. Visibility and road conditions could shift rapidly, especially near Lake Michigan.
Winter Safety Reminders
To stay safe during winter weather, the National Weather Service recommends the following:
- Drive carefully: Reduce speed, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking.
- Prepare your vehicle: Keep your gas tank full and carry a scraper, jumper cables, flashlight, blankets, food, and water.
- Avoid unnecessary travel: Stay off roads during the heaviest snowfall if possible.
- Stay visible if stranded: Use hazard lights and tie a cloth to your vehicle’s antenna to signal for help.
- Give snow plows space: Do not pass plows unless you have a clear view of the road ahead.
Outlook
Snow is expected to taper off early Saturday morning as winds shift, though lingering slick spots may persist into the weekend. Temperatures will remain below freezing, with another chance of light lake-effect snow late Saturday night.
