Winter Weather Advisory and Storm Watch in Effect for West Michigan Through the Weekend

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued both a Winter Weather Advisory and a Winter Storm Watch for parts of West Michigan, warning residents of hazardous travel conditions and heavy snow potential through the holiday weekend.

Advisory Details

According to the NWS, a Winter Weather Advisory remains active through 7 p.m. Friday, with additional snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches expected Thursday night into Friday. Wind gusts may reach up to 35 mph, leading to reduced visibility and slick road conditions across several counties in the region.

“Visibility and road conditions may change rapidly over short distances in lake-effect snow tonight,” meteorologists cautioned. “Drivers should slow down and use extra caution when traveling.”

Winter Storm Watch to Follow

Beginning Saturday morning, a Winter Storm Watch will go into effect and remain active through Sunday morning, as forecasters predict heavy, widespread snow across much of West Michigan.

The storm could bring six or more inches of accumulation, with the heaviest snow expected Saturday evening into early Sunday. Meteorologists warn that strong winds accompanying the system could create blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility.

Travel Impacts and Safety Advice

The approaching storm comes as many residents return home from Thanksgiving gatherings. Officials advise checking road conditions before traveling and avoiding unnecessary trips during periods of heavy snow.

“This weekend’s storm will likely impact travel across the region,” the NWS said. “If you must travel, carry an emergency kit and allow extra time to reach your destination.”
