Weather Alert: Snow Showers Moving Across Central New York Through Early Friday

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a special weather statement for parts of Central and Southern New York, warning of bands of snow showers and gusty winds that could quickly impact travel through early Friday morning.

Advisory Details

The alert, issued at 10:09 p.m. Thursday, remains in effect until 12:15 a.m. Friday for the following counties: Chemung, Tompkins, Cortland, Chenango, Otsego, Tioga, Broome, and Delaware.

Forecasters say several bands of snow showers are moving east and southeast across the region, particularly affecting I-81 in Cortland and northern Broome counties. Additional snow showers are expected to move through Madison and Chenango counties before midnight.

“Up to an additional inch of snow will occur with these snow showers along with gusty winds,” the NWS said. “Travel conditions may quickly worsen, so allow extra time to reach your destination.”

Travel Impacts

Motorists should prepare for sudden drops in visibility, slick road surfaces, and strong wind gusts as the snow bands move through. Even light accumulations could lead to hazardous driving, especially on untreated highways, bridges, and rural roads.

Authorities are urging drivers to reduce speed, use headlights, and allow extra distance between vehicles to stay safe during rapidly changing conditions.

Forecast Outlook

The snow showers are expected to taper off after midnight, leaving behind scattered flurries into early Friday. Temperatures will remain below freezing, so icy patches may persist on roads and sidewalks through the morning commute.

Another system could bring additional light snow over the weekend, according to forecasters.
