Weather Alert: Patchy Freezing Fog Creates Hazardous Conditions Across Western Pennsylvania

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a special weather statement warning of patchy freezing fog across parts of western and central Pennsylvania through the early hours of Thursday morning, cautioning drivers and residents about potential slick conditions.

The advisory, released at 9:51 p.m. Wednesday, remains in effect until 3 a.m. Thursday for several counties, including Westmoreland Ridges, Higher Elevations of Indiana, Mercer, Venango, Forest, Lawrence, Butler, Clarion, Jefferson, Allegheny, Armstrong, Westmoreland, and Indiana counties.

Fog and Ice Risk Overnight

Meteorologists say that temperatures will remain below freezing overnight, allowing moisture in the air to form freezing fog in isolated areas. This can lead to a light glaze of ice forming on bridges, elevated surfaces, and untreated roadways.

“Freezing fog remains possible through the overnight hours,” the weather service stated. “This may result in a light coating of ice, particularly for elevated surfaces, though some slick spots are possible on area roads and sidewalks. Use extra caution if outside this evening.”

Travel and Safety Tips

Authorities urge drivers to reduce speed, increase following distances, and use low-beam headlights when driving in foggy conditions. Pedestrians are also encouraged to watch for slippery sidewalks and parking lots during the morning commute.

Safety tips for navigating freezing fog:

  • Avoid sudden stops or turns—road traction may be reduced.
  • Use fog lights or low beams to maintain visibility.
  • Allow extra time for travel and monitor local traffic reports.
  • Watch for black ice, especially on bridges, ramps, and shaded roadways.

Outlook

Conditions are expected to improve after sunrise Thursday, as temperatures rise above freezing and the fog dissipates. However, some lingering slick spots may persist in higher elevations through mid-morning.
