BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a weather alert for heavy snow across portions of Central and Southern New York, warning residents of rapidly deteriorating travel conditions Wednesday night.
Areas Affected
The alert, issued at 10:27 p.m. Wednesday, remains in effect until 11:30 p.m. for Chenango, Otsego, Broome, Delaware, and Sullivan counties.
At 10:26 p.m., radar detected a band of heavy snow stretching from Unadilla to near Shunk, moving southeast at around 25 mph.
Communities expected to experience the heaviest snowfall include Rockland, Binghamton, Vestal, Johnson City, Carbondale, Kirkwood, Conklin, Vernon, and Clarks Summit.
Travel Impacts
The NWS warned that conditions could deteriorate quickly, with rapid drops in visibility and snow- or ice-covered roads. Drivers should prepare for slick surfaces and slower travel times through the evening.
“Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in winter weather situations,” the NWS said. “Be prepared for snow or ice-covered roads. Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.”
Motorists are urged to use extra caution if traveling into or through the affected snow band, as bursts of heavy snow could create whiteout conditions and lead to accidents.
Forecast Outlook
Forecasters expect the band of heavy snow to move southeast overnight, tapering off toward early Thursday morning. Total accumulations will vary, with localized heavier amounts possible in higher elevations.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts and check road conditions before heading out.
