CAMBRIA & SOMERSET COUNTIES, Pa. – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a weather alert for parts of western Pennsylvania, warning of freezing rain and drizzle through the early hours of Wednesday morning.
According to the advisory released at 10:35 p.m. Tuesday, the alert remains in effect until 5 a.m. Wednesday for Cambria and Somerset counties, where temperatures are hovering around the freezing mark—especially across the higher elevations.
Hazardous Travel Conditions Overnight
Forecasters say that rain will move eastward overnight, gradually becoming lighter, but lingering moisture combined with cold air will likely lead to patches of freezing rain or drizzle. These conditions could produce icy spots on roadways, particularly bridges, overpasses, and ridgetop routes.
The NWS cautioned drivers that visibility may also drop significantly in the early morning hours due to fog and mist in elevated terrain.
“If traveling over the higher elevations, be prepared for icy patches on the roads,” the weather service stated. “Use extra caution if you must travel tonight.”
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distances, and avoid sudden braking or lane changes on potentially slick surfaces.
Areas Most at Risk
The greatest threat for ice accumulation exists in:
- Northern Somerset County, including Berlin, Meyersdale, and Garrett
- Central and southern Cambria County, including Ebensburg and Nanty Glo
Even light icing can make roads treacherous, particularly before sunrise when temperatures remain below freezing.
Forecast Outlook
By mid-morning Wednesday, temperatures are expected to rise above freezing, allowing road surfaces to thaw and improving travel conditions. However, residents should remain alert for black ice on untreated secondary roads and shaded areas.
The weather service continues to monitor developing conditions and will issue updates if the freezing rain area expands or intensifies overnight.
