Weather Alert: Dense Fog Advisory in Effect for Eastern North Carolina Until 1 A.M. Monday

GREENVILLE, N.C. — The National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City has issued a dense fog advisory for parts of eastern North Carolina through 1 a.m. Monday, warning drivers to expect limited visibility and hazardous travel conditions overnight.

Areas Under the Advisory

The alert, issued at 9:50 p.m. Sunday, covers Martin, Pitt, Greene, and Lenoir counties, where fog has developed across the coastal plain region. Visibility could drop to one mile or less at times, particularly in low-lying and rural areas.

“Areas of fog, dense at times, have developed across portions of the coastal plain this evening,” the NWS said. “If you need to travel, turn on your low-beam headlights when approaching fog, drive slowly, and keep your distance from other vehicles.”

Safety Tips for Foggy Travel

The National Weather Service provided several key safety reminders for motorists traveling through dense fog:

  • Reduce speed and allow extra time to reach your destination safely.
  • Use low-beam headlights and fog lights if available. Avoid using high beams, which reflect off fog and reduce visibility.
  • Maintain a safe distance between vehicles in case of sudden stops or changing traffic patterns.
  • Stay in your lane and use road markings as a guide.
  • If visibility drops to near zero, pull off the roadway to a safe location such as a parking lot, turn on hazard lights, and wait for conditions to improve.

Advisory Duration and Outlook

The dense fog is expected to gradually lift after 1 a.m., once temperatures cool and winds begin to shift overnight. The fog could return again early Monday morning in some inland locations before clearing with daylight.

Motorists are urged to remain cautious and follow NWS guidelines to reduce the risk of accidents.
