Weather Alert Day: Winter Storm to Bring Heavy Snow and Dangerous Cold to Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio — A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Saturday, as the Tri-State region prepares for 3 to 5 inches of snow followed by dangerous arctic cold that could bring subzero wind chills through Sunday, according to the 9 First Warning Weather Team.

Snow Arrives Saturday Afternoon

Forecasters say cloudy skies overnight Friday will keep temperatures from falling too sharply, but a chill will still set in, with morning lows in the mid-20s. Snow is expected to begin around 1 p.m. Saturday, spreading across the Cincinnati area through the afternoon.

Meteorologists attribute the higher-than-average snow totals to a high Snow-to-Liquid Ratio (SLR) — meaning lighter, fluffier snow that accumulates quickly despite limited moisture.

“A typical winter storm has a ratio of about 10:1, but this system will be closer to 20:1,” forecasters explained. “The snowflakes will be light and airy, so even a small amount of liquid will create several inches of snow.”

Travel and Road Hazards

Roads are expected to become snow-covered and slippery by Saturday evening, and visibility may be reduced during heavier snow bands. Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, reduce speed, and allow extra stopping distance.

By Saturday night, temperatures will plummet to around 4°F, with snow tapering off overnight.

Bitter Cold and Dangerous Wind Chills Sunday

A powerful arctic front will sweep across the Ohio Valley early Sunday, sending “feels-like” temperatures below zero and keeping daytime highs in the low teens.

“Even during the Bengals game, air temperatures will stay in the teens with wind chills well below zero,” meteorologists warned. “Anyone outdoors should limit exposure and bundle up.”

Health experts advise residents to dress in layers, cover hands, face, and ears, and limit time outside, as frostbite can occur in minutes under these conditions.
