A woman from Alexandria, Virginia, who operates a county-licensed at-home daycare in Fairfax County surrendered herself on Tuesday after being accused of assaulting children under her supervision.
According to a news release shared by the Fairfax County police on Friday, authorities received an initial report of an assault in the 3600 block of Paul Street in Bailey’s Crossroads on Aug. 1.
The statement revealed that Sumy Shah, a 47-year-old resident of Alexandria, operated a county-licensed at-home daycare. Detectives investigating child abuse discovered that Shah had used tape to restrain the victims on multiple occasions.
Shah is facing a total of four charges, including two misdemeanor assault charges and two charges for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to detectives working on the case. On August 20, she voluntarily surrendered to the police and was subsequently released on an unsecured bond.
According to county records, Sumy is set to appear at a hearing on Sept. 26 in Fairfax County’s Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
According to the department, Shah has been released. Victim specialists have been brought in to assist those affected by the reported assaults.
