Authorities have reported that a suspect has been apprehended following a disturbing incident in Miami. A man’s encounter with a woman he connected with on a dating app took a terrifying turn, resulting in his abduction and brutal robbery.
Robert Andre Maytin, 20, was taken into custody on Friday for alleged offenses including armed kidnapping, armed robbery, and unlawful use of a debit card, according to records.
An arrest report states that the victim encountered a woman on the dating app BLK on July 18.
They had planned to meet at the victim’s home that day, but as the victim waited for her arrival, he received a Facetime call. She informed him that her vehicle had broken down and she needed $800 to have it towed.
The victim agreed and upon her arrival at his home, he handed her $600.
On the following day, July 19, the woman reached out to the victim and proposed going out. He accepted the invitation, but upon her arrival, he noticed that she was accompanied by a man driving a white SUV, with Maytin seated in the back, according to the report.
The victim entered the SUV and took a seat next to Maytin, embarking on a drive around, potentially in the Wynwood area.
They eventually halted near a park, where Maytin brandished a knife and forcefully requested the victim to hand over his money, wallet, and cellphone, according to the report.
According to the report, Maytin allegedly assaulted the victim by punching them in the face and then proceeded to demand money through Cashapp.
The victim was coerced into sending $393, but the perpetrators insisted on more money and forced him to go to an ATM on Northwest 14th Avenue. Multiple transactions took place, resulting in a total of over $1,000.
According to the report, the victim expressed feeling “under duress” as Maytin observed him making the withdrawals.
Shortly after, the perpetrators left the victim at an undisclosed place. He then made his way to Baptist Health Urgent Care on Southwest 136th Street to receive medical attention for the injuries on his face.
Additional ATM transactions totaling $700 were recorded on July 20, according to bank statements.
Miami Police obtained photos from the ATM surveillance cameras and utilized facial recognition technology to identify a potential suspect. On September 4th, the victim positively identified Maytin as the individual who had robbed him from a photo lineup, according to the report.
Maytin has been taken into custody and is now in jail. He appeared before a judge during the weekend and was ordered to be held without bond.
The arrest report did not specify whether the authorities were actively seeking the woman who had connected with the victim on the application or the man who was operating the SUV.
