Utah Mother Fell Asleep while Holding 4-month-old Infant who Fell on Ground and Bled to Death: Authorities

A mother was taken into custody on Tuesday regarding the tragic death of her 4-month-old infant, according to police reports.

Raona Dorothy Mora, 32, has been taken into custody as authorities investigate allegations of reckless child abuse leading to homicide.

In the early hours of Tuesday, around 3:30 a.m., detectives responded to a residence in Eagle Mountain close to Nolen Park, where a 4-month-old boy experienced significant head injuries.

Emergency responders swiftly initiated medical care for the infant, who was subsequently airlifted to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, as detailed in a police booking affidavit. The helicopter made a detour to take the child to Primary Children’s in Lehi due to the child’s deteriorating condition.

Upon arrival, authorities reported that the mother, Mora, explained she had dozed off at the bedside while cradling the infant and subsequently tumbled to the floor, landing on the baby.

Hospital officials reported that the infant suffered several skull fractures, leading to a noticeable indentation in the skull and significant brain bleeding. The affidavit revealed that the skull indentation was remarkably pronounced, easily noticeable without any aid.

Medical professionals informed law enforcement that the infant’s injuries were not compatible with survival. The infant was declared deceased shortly thereafter.

During a police interview, Mora reiterated that she had dozed off while sitting on the bedside with the baby in her arms, leading to her falling forward off the bed and onto the baby, as stated in the affidavit. The bed consists of a mattress and box spring, standing approximately 18 inches above the floor, according to police reports.

Mora recounted that she found herself lying on her back, cradling the baby in her arms, before the father took the child away. The mother recounted that she rose and retrieved the baby, attempting to comfort him as he wept, but observed that he was rigid, breathing strangely, and had blood coming from his ear. Mora stated that she subsequently roused the father, who had returned to slumber, and contacted emergency services.

Authorities indicated that medical professionals have stated there is “no possibility that the extensive and life-ending injuries sustained by the 4-month-old baby boy could have resulted from the reported circumstances involving Mrs. Raona Mora,” according to the affidavit.

Authorities stated that the mother’s account was “inconsistent” and “incongruent with the numerous severe brain injuries resulting from an alleged fall from a height of 18 inches.”

Mora remains in custody with no option for bail.
