Two People Have Been Detained After a Baby Died at an Unlawful Day Care in California, According to Officials

WATSONVILLE, Calif. — A woman and her adult daughter were detained after a newborn died at an unlawful day care they ran in central California, according to officials.

According to a statement released by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived about 10:30 a.m. Saturday to complaints of a baby not breathing at a home in Royal Oaks.

The 3-month-old child died at the hospital, according to the statement.

Sheriff’s officials stated up to 30 children were inside the home near Watsonville on the state’s central coast.

A 62-year-old mother and her 35-year-old daughter, both of whom live in Royal Oaks, were arrested for alleged involuntary manslaughter, child abuse, and operating an unregistered child care service, according to officials.

Their bail amount was set at $50,000 apiece.
