LACEY, Wash. – Police have arrested two 20-year-old suspects in connection with the drive-by shooting deaths of teenage brothers Alexander and Deven Borgen, ages 16 and 17, in what investigators now believe was a case of mistaken identity.
According to the Lacey Police Department, Trequanne Trenelle Wilson-Mason of Lacey was taken into custody after investigators linked him to the November 14 double homicide through surveillance footage, cell phone data, and witness statements. A second suspect was later arrested following a brief vehicle pursuit in Pierce County that ended in a rollover crash when officers used a pursuit intervention technique.
Police said the second suspect is currently being treated at a hospital and will be booked into Thurston County Jail on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of drive-by shooting once medically cleared.
Investigation and Arrest
Authorities said officers responded around 1:50 a.m. to reports of gunfire near 24th Avenue Southeast and College Street Southeast, just south of Mountain View Elementary School. When police arrived, they found both teenage brothers fatally shot in the street.
Surveillance video traced the suspect vehicle to a nearby home tied to Wilson-Mason, who also had a prior domestic violence case from February involving harassment and assault. Police later located him at a hotel in Wenatchee, where he was arrested with assistance from local law enforcement.
Court documents revealed Wilson-Mason told investigators he intended to target another person he believed was involved in an earlier shooting at his residence. When he realized he had shot two innocent teens instead, he reportedly became emotional and confessed.
Family’s Reaction
At a court hearing Wednesday, the brothers’ parents expressed anguish over the loss of their sons.
“My son Deven had all A’s in school, he went to church,” said Christina Borgen, their mother. “My son Alex had changed his life, had all A’s, was doing good.”
“Why wasn’t he locked up before? He was violent — they knew that before,” added Kenneth Borgen, the boys’ grandfather.
Legal Proceedings
Wilson-Mason is being held without bail on two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of drive-by shooting, and a felony warrant for violating a court order related to his February domestic violence case. His arraignment is scheduled for November 25, where he is expected to enter a plea.
Police are continuing to investigate the events leading up to the deadly shooting, which has left the Lacey community grieving two promising young lives cut short.
