Traffic Alert: DUI Suspect Arrested After Three-Car Crash Causes Major Delays in Pierce County

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — A three-vehicle crash near Spanaway led to major traffic disruptions on southbound State Route 7 Tuesday afternoon, with two people hospitalized and one driver arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP).

Two Seriously Injured in Afternoon Collision

The collision occurred around 12:47 p.m. near Pacific Avenue South, where two of the right lanes were blocked for several hours. Trooper Kameron Watts said two individuals suffered serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

“There’s an extensive investigation underway regarding the suspected DUI,” Trooper Watts confirmed.

Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene as traffic backed up for miles, forcing drivers to use the center turn lane to pass through the area.

DUI Investigation Underway

Authorities said the alleged causing driver was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of DUI. Officials have not yet released the suspect’s name pending further investigation.

The Washington State Patrol is continuing to gather evidence and conduct interviews to determine how the crash unfolded. Preliminary findings suggest impaired driving may have played a significant role in the incident.

Traffic Impacts and Alternate Routes

The Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reported that both right lanes on southbound SR-7 remained blocked for much of the afternoon, creating lengthy travel delays through the Spanaway area. Drivers were urged to use alternate routes and to expect slow traffic well into the evening commute.

Public Safety Reminder

State officials are again reminding drivers to never drive under the influence and to remain cautious when traveling through active crash or cleanup zones.

“This is a strong reminder that impaired driving endangers everyone on the road,” Trooper Watts said. “If you plan to drink, plan for a ride.”

As of Tuesday evening, cleanup crews were still working to reopen all lanes.
