In San Francisco’s Fillmore District late Friday morning, police officers shot two dogs, one of which died, following an incident where several dogs attacked a smaller dog and bit a man.
According to San Francisco police, the incident occurred near Fillmore and Eddy just before 11 a.m. on Friday. The San Francisco Department of Emergency shared an update on X regarding police presence at the intersection of Geary Blvd and Steiner Street due to ongoing emergency response efforts. The announcement urged people to steer clear of the location, but details about the event were not shared.
Fire officials in San Francisco informed CBS News Bay Area that an incident reported at 11:11 a.m. involved three dogs belonging to a single owner, with at least one of those dogs attempting to attack another dog.
Witnesses allegedly stepped in, using pepper spray on the dogs. Alongside fire units, personnel from the San Francisco police and San Francisco Animal Care and Control also arrived at the scene.
Emergency responders reached the scene and discovered a 45-year-old man with bite wounds on his arm and hand. Fire officials reported that the victim was taken to San Francisco General Hospital. The dogs were secured by SFPD and SF Animal Care and Control.
Authorities later verified that they shot two of the dogs, resulting in one dog’s death from gunfire.
Authorities reported that the trio of aggressive dogs were mastiffs, each weighing approximately 120 pounds, according to police spokesman Robert Rueca.
Officers arrived at the intersection of Ellis and Fillmore Streets at 10:50 a.m. following a report of three dogs attacking another dog. Officers on the scene witnessed a dog aggressively assaulting a pedestrian.
“Soon after, an officer-involved shooting took place, resulting in the death of one of the attacking dogs,” police stated in a press release.
Aerial footage captured the scene at a Safeway parking lot, where several officers were present near a yellow tarp, likely covering the dog that had been shot and killed.
A second dog was rounded up and taken into custody in the attack area, assisted by Animal Care and Control. Officers chased after the third dog for several blocks, leading to Raymond Kimbell Park at Geary Boulevard and Steiner Street.
An officer fired their weapon during the encounter. Authorities successfully took the dog into custody, according to police.
The dog’s owner took their pet to a veterinary hospital for a check-up after the attack.
