Plot of the Movie-
Melvin Smiley enjoys a nice life because to his abilities as a contract assassin, but he lives with a very working-class mentality, which is compounded by his ongoing efforts to sustain two love relationships. One is with the demanding and demeaning Chantel, who refuses to acknowledge his labor, and the other is with Pam, who has no idea what he does. Melvin is a bit of a pushover, striving to satisfy all of Chantel’s expectations, even the most extravagant ones, and rolling over anytime one of his coworkers takes credit for his accomplishments. Melvin is frequently shown taking Maalox to treat a growing stress-induced ulcer during the early scenes, maybe as a result of his powerlessness in exerting himself.
Feeling underappreciated for their work for mafia leader Paris, Smiley, Cisco, Crunch, Vince, and Gump embark on a solo task, kidnapping Keiko Nishi, the adolescent daughter of local electronics billionaire Jiro Nishi, for a large ransom. Unfortunately, the crew is unaware that Nishi has recently gone bankrupt due to his unsuccessful film venture, and that their employer Paris is the girl’s godfather. Melvin is forced to hide the tied and gagged schoolgirl on his property in order to keep her existence disguised from Pam and her parents, who are coming for supper.
Melvin feels sorry for Keiko and frees her from her enslavement. In the hours that follow, they develop a bond while making supper together, which leads to a love scene similar of the pottery scene from Ghost, but which is cut short when Keiko tries to flee. A frantic Cisco shoots Gump after being ordered by Paris to find the kidnappers of his goddaughter, but not before seducing him into also implicating Melvin in the kidnapping.
Melvin’s supper with Pam’s family is interrupted by a squad of assassins, resulting in a gunfight during which Melvin finds Pam was about to break up with him due to pressure from her mother, a devout Jew who is very opposed to her being with Melvin, a Gentile. Melvin and Keiko’s increasing love for one other led to an uneasy relationship, and she and Melvin attempt to flee the disaster while being chased by Cisco. Melvin chances to run meet Chantel in the midst of the confusion and finally seizes the opportunity to confront her and end their relationship.
Cisco and Melvin quarrel, which culminates at a video store where the ever-honest Melvin pauses to return an overdue cassette of King Kong Lives. Melvin stabs Cisco in the chest, but not before Cisco has armed an explosive device. Melvin exits the building, only to be met by Keiko, her father, and Paris. He returns to the building, which has exploded.
Paris and Nishi call off the manhunt, fearing Melvin is dead. Soon after, Melvin is discovered to have survived, shielded from the blast by a massive solid gold film stand-up created for the flop that ended Nishi’s career. Melvin and Keiko are reconciled and ride out together, while Nishi recoups his losses by filming a film based on his daughter’s life story.
