Texas Man Arrested for Several Sex Crimes against Minors; All while being a Priest at a Church

Brownsville, TX: Records show that a priest in Brownsville was charged with several sex crimes involving children.

On May 8, Fernando Gonzalez Ortega was charged with a crime. At the time of his arrest, he was a priest at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Brownsville.

Six counts of the indictment say he continuously abused a child (under 14 years old), was indecent with a child while having sexual contact with them, sexual assault by priest, and three counts of sexual assault of a child.

According to the charges, Gonzalez-Ortega abused a kid sexually from December 27, 2012, to December 26, 2014.

Another charge against Gonzalez Ortega says that he sexually attacked the child three times in 2017, with the most recent attack happening on September 15, 2022.

Police in Brownsville arrested Gonzalez Ortega on February 12 in the 1900 block of Barnard Road on a number of warrants. Gonzalez Ortega was first caught in February and charged with several crimes linked to child sex, including trafficking a person.

He was charged the next day, and his bond was set at $800,000.

After Gonzalez Ortega was arrested, Bishop Daniel E. Flores made a statement in which he said the person who came forward is now an adult and was told to tell police about the claim.
