A teen died in Texas after being hit by a jet ski whose driver fled the scene.
Ava Moore, 18, was murdered after a watercraft carrying two female occupants struck her while kayaking on Grapevine Lake on Sunday evening, May 25, according to a news release shared on Facebook.
Lisa Scrabeck, a witness who assisted in providing aid, told CBS News Texas that Moore was wearing a life jacket, which was removed before CPR began.
“She didn’t suffer in agony,” Scrabeck told CBS News Texas. “It is quite terrible, and I express my heartfelt condolences to the family. I can’t image being the parents of this little kid. But one thing I can assure you is that she did not suffer from the minute I saw her.”
Moore “just returned from Colorado Springs after finishing her 1st year at the Air Force Preparatory School,” according to a GoFundMe page. She was previously a “outstanding student and athlete” at Timber Creek High School.
The basketball player helped the Lady Falcons go 71-51 over four years, including a 24-10 record in 2022 as a sophomore and a 17-14 record as a senior, according to Sports Illustrated.
Moore’s family hopes to fund $20,000 for her funeral expenses after her unexpected death, according to a GoFundMe page. As of this morning, May 27, the fundraising has raised more than $11,500.
“We are currently grieving the loss of our daughter. “Our prayers are also with the young ladies involved and their families,” Moore’s family said in a statement to WFAA.
According to the news release, Texas Game Wardens are conducting the investigation into the water fatality, and the Grapevine Police Department is looking into the associated vehicle hit-and-run event.
They have posted a photo of the lady accused of piloting the jet ski and stated, “If anyone has information about either suspect, please contact [email protected].”
“Our sympathies are with Ava’s family and friends during this terrible time. Texas Game Wardens remain committed to keeping our public waters safe,” according to the news release.
PEOPLE have asked Texas Parks & Wildlife and the Grapevine Police Department for an update on the inquiry.
