Tennessee Father Strangled His 7-Year-Old Daughter during Domestic Assault Incident; Slapped with Charges

A father, who was released on bond for a murder charge, is now facing accusations of strangling his 7-year-old daughter and disposing of her following a dispute with her mother, according to Tennessee authorities.

A 27-year-old man is now facing additional charges, which include aggravated assault, two counts of domestic assault, child abuse and neglect, theft of stolen property, two counts of being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and unlawful exposure, according to Shelby County records.

The man is identified as Markell Hare. He was indicted in the 2016 murder of a music teacher.

A father was among six individuals taken into custody in connection with the 2016 home invasion and murder of Memphis music educator Christopher Waters, according to reports from WMC and WREG. In 2018, he faced indictment and later secured a $200,000 bond in 2021, according to records.

On the morning of Oct. 27, a 7-year-old girl reported to 911 that her father had grabbed her by the neck and thrown her onto a bed, according to an arrest affidavit from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities reported that family members informed them of a dispute between the man and his girlfriend, during which he allegedly assaulted her and subsequently choked their daughter. According to deputies, the girl’s aunt reported that she called 911 and attempted to help, but the man then assaulted and strangled her too.

Deputies reported that both the 7-year-old and her aunt had bruises on their necks.

A family member expressed to investigators a fear of the man due to the gravity of his first-degree murder charges, as noted by deputies in the affidavit.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered two firearms in the father’s waistband, with one of the weapons identified as stolen, according to deputies.

His girlfriend has also claimed that he sent her sexually explicit photos and videos.

Documents indicate that his original bond of $200,000 was revoked, but he has been granted a new bond of $100,000 for the current case.
