Tennessee Elementary School Principal Arrested after He was Found Inhaling Gas to Get High while Driving

Washington County, TN–  Matthew Combs, the principal of Jonesborough Elementary School in Washington County, Tennessee, was arrested on Saturday night after allegedly driving under the influence of nitrous oxide, an aerosol gas.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) reported the incident, which took place around 11 p.m. on Tom Pate Road.

According to the arrest report, a witness contacted authorities, stating that Combs had driven away from his home after using aerosol to become intoxicated. The witness, who said she had argued with Combs about his aerosol use, followed him to ensure he did not crash. She reported that Combs eventually turned his vehicle around and returned home.

When a deputy arrived at the scene, they reportedly found Combs sitting in the driver’s seat of his vehicle, inhaling nitrous oxide from a bottle. When questioned, Combs denied leaving his driveway. However, he admitted to using nitrous oxide and acknowledged that he was not in a proper state to drive.

Combs was arrested and charged with inhaling, selling, giving, or possessing glue, paint, gasoline, aerosol, or gases for unlawful purposes.

School District Responds

At the time of his arrest, Combs was on medical leave from his position as principal. Superintendent Jerry Boyd stated that Combs would be suspended without pay starting Monday, December 16, 2024. The school district emphasized that further personnel actions would be determined following the completion of the investigation.

A statement from Washington County Schools clarified that Combs had not been actively serving as principal since November 4, 2024, when an interim principal was assigned to Jonesborough Elementary School. The district expressed its commitment to following its personnel policies and declined to comment further on the matter.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, often referred to as “laughing gas,” is commonly used for medical and dental purposes as an anesthetic. However, it is also misused as a recreational inhalant. Inhaling nitrous oxide can lead to intoxication, impaired judgment, and potentially dangerous behavior, such as driving under the influence.
