Suspect Arrested in 2022 Double Murder Case Near Atwater

MERCED COUNTY, Calif. — After more than two years of investigation, authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with a 2022 double murder that claimed the lives of two young men near Atwater, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Office.

Arrest Made After Multi-Year Investigation

Detectives confirmed that 30-year-old Justin Vanrassan was taken into custody in Las Vegas following a lengthy investigation that included the release of digital composite sketches in October 2025. Vanrassan is now facing charges related to the deadly shooting.

The 2022 Shooting

The violent incident occurred in July 2022, when 23-year-old Ruben Coronado and 24-year-old Eli Correa were fatally shot while sitting inside their car near Atwater. Investigators said gunfire came from a passing vehicle, striking both men and seriously injuring a woman who was also inside.

Authorities described the case as a targeted attack, though the exact motive has not yet been disclosed.

Bringing Justice and Closure

Following Vanrassan’s arrest, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office said they hope the development will bring closure to the victims’ families, who have been waiting more than two years for justice.

Officials said extradition proceedings are underway to return Vanrassan to California to face formal charges.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to determine whether others may have been involved in the 2022 shooting.
