The Social Security Administration (SSA) thinks that Disability Insurance (SSDI) payouts will be made in May 2025 in the same way they have been in the past, based on dates of birth and certain eligibility requirements.
The official changes, like the cost of living index (COLA), were released at the end of 2024, but the amounts will still go up by 2.5% until December 2025. The last payment was made on April 23, which was the 23rd for the third group of people who were housed by date of birth.
The SSA has confirmed that SSDI funds for May 2025 will be sent out
The SSA says that by the end of 2024, 9.1 million people who were eligible for SSDI had signed up. A small rise is predicted by May 2025, but there are no exact monthly numbers available yet. This number changes because of things like new people being accepted into the program and checks of eligibility, but it’s hard to be exact because there isn’t a lot of public data.
The money is either mailed or put straight into the beneficiary’s bank account, as chosen by the beneficiary. Since checks can be lost, stolen, or delayed in the mail, the government agency says that direct deposit into a bank account should be the first method of payment.
From what the SSA says, people will get their deposits on three Wednesdays in May, based on the day they were born. There are some exceptions for people who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or who started getting it before 1997. These people will get extra money every first business Friday.
People who get SSDI are split into three groups for the purpose of receiving funds:
- People born on May 1st through May 10th will get their money on May 14th.
- On May 21, people born between May 11 and May 20 will do so.
- People whose birthdays are between May 21 and May 31 will be able to use their resources on May 28.
- The planned date is May 2 for special cases like people who get SSI or who started getting before May 1997. This change is made because May 3, which is usually a Friday for this group, is now a Saturday. In the event that the original date falls on a weekend, SSA gives deliveries more importance on work days.
What amount of money will you get if you apply for SSDI?
SSA studies say that the highest amount that could be expected in 2025 is $4,018 per month. Compared to the highest amount of $3,822 recorded in 2024, this number shows an increase of about 2.5%. The payment would have been about $3,920 if only that raise had been made, but the difference could be due to other adjustments or credits earned for retiring later.
The SSA hasn’t released exact data for SSDI in 2025, but the average benefit in January 2025 was $1,580, which suggests that disability isn’t worth as much as it has been in the past. Based on SSA statistics, the average SSDI in May is likely to be between $1,500 and $1,600.
