BERKSHIRE COUNTY, Mass. – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a weather alert for parts of Berkshire County as heavy snow showers moved through the region Sunday evening, creating slick travel conditions and reduced visibility on local roads.
According to the NWS, the alert was issued at 7:22 p.m. Sunday and remained in effect until 8:15 p.m., with forecasters warning that snow bands were moving east-southeast at around 30 mph.
“At 7:19 p.m., a band of heavy snow showers extended from Amsterdam to Latham moving east southeast at 30 MPH,” said the National Weather Service in its statement.
Rapidly Changing Conditions Across the County
Forecasters cautioned that conditions could deteriorate quickly, especially on untreated roadways and elevated surfaces. The snow showers briefly intensified over western Massachusetts, coating roads and making for dangerous evening travel.
“Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in winter weather situations,” the NWS warned. “Be prepared for snow or ice-covered roads. Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.”
Motorists were urged to reduce speeds, keep headlights on, and maintain safe distances between vehicles as visibility dropped sharply during the bursts of snow.
Early Glimpse of Winter for Western Massachusetts
Sunday’s snow marks one of the first notable winter weather events of the season for Berkshire County. While accumulations were light, the brief but heavy snow bands signaled the start of a colder pattern expected to linger through the week.
Meteorologists say a mix of rain and snow showers could continue in the coming days, particularly across higher elevations near the Taconic Range and northern hills.
Winter Weather Safety Tips
The NWS reminded residents to stay alert during sudden weather changes and follow basic winter safety precautions:
- Allow extra time for travel and avoid sudden braking.
- Use low-beam headlights to improve visibility in snow.
- Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle, including blankets and a flashlight.
- Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of reduced visibility.
As temperatures continue to fall overnight, some slick spots may develop on bridges and shaded roads.
