People who like to go to Six Flags America will have to find other places to have fun.
On May 1, the theme park said that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor in Bowie, Maryland, would be closing at the end of the 2025 season.
In a press statement, Six Flags President and CEO Richard A. Zimmerman said, “As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan.” “We’ve looked at a few different options and think that marketing the property for redevelopment will bring in the most money and value.”
The almost 500-acre land will be put up for sale so that it can be built again.
Zimmerman said, “This was a tough choice, and we know it will have an effect on our Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor park employees and guests.” “We appreciate the hard work of our park employees who make memories that will last a lifetime for our guests. Six Flags is committed to helping all employees who will be affected by the park’s closure at the end of this year.”
The company says that the park has about 70 full-time workers at the moment, and those who are qualified will be given severance pay and benefits.
Anyone with a season pass will be able to use the park until the end of the 2025 season. On November 2, 2025, the park will no longer be open to the public.
The company tells PEOPLE, “We have not yet determined what will happen to each ride or attraction after the park is closed but relocation to other Six Flags parks or selling to other amusement park operators are options that may be considered.”
In the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation runs more than 27 theme parks, 15 water parks, and nine resorts.
The Six Flags America site first opened in 1974 as The Largo Wildlife Preserve, a drive-thru safari. In 1999, it was remodeled and became Six Flags America.
