Section of I-94 in Jackson County Reopens After Thanksgiving Crash Shuts Down Highway for Hours

JACKSON COUNTY, Mich. — A section of Interstate 94 in Jackson County was closed for several hours on Thanksgiving evening following a crash that prompted emergency crews to shut down eastbound lanes, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).

Crash and Closure Details

Authorities said eastbound I-94 at M-106 near Exit 139 was closed around 5 p.m. Thursday after a crash blocked the roadway. MDOT crews and local law enforcement responded quickly, diverting traffic while cleanup and investigation efforts were underway.

The freeway was reopened around 7:45 p.m., restoring normal traffic flow after a closure that lasted nearly three hours.

Officials have not yet confirmed the number of vehicles involved, the cause of the crash, or whether there were any injuries.

Hazardous Road Conditions Reported

The crash occurred as slick road conditions developed across parts of Mid-Michigan due to cold evening temperatures. Multiple other incidents were reported Thursday night, including slide-offs and minor crashes along U.S.-127 near Van Horn Road, authorities said.

Law enforcement agencies across the region have urged drivers to slow down and use extra caution as winter weather continues to create slippery travel conditions heading into the weekend.

Officials Urge Caution for Holiday Travelers

MDOT and state police reminded motorists that even light precipitation and dropping temperatures can make highways hazardous, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

“We’re seeing the start of winter driving season,” a state trooper said. “Reduce speed, leave extra following distance, and stay alert for icy patches — especially during evening hours.”

No additional details have been released about the Thanksgiving crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
