Runaway Pumpkin Disrupts Traffic in Ohio, Officers Wrestle it to Safety

A giant inflatable pumpkin caused a traffic jam by occupying two lanes on the roadside in Bay Village, Ohio.

A storm on Monday, Oct. 14, appeared to have sent a giant pumpkin from a resident’s yard into the street.

Bay Village police responded to a call at Wolf and Saddler roads regarding what officials described as the “runaway pumpkin.”

In the dashcam footage shared by the department, an officer is seen getting out of his cruiser and approaching the pumpkin, whose tether strings flap loosely from its top.

The officer reaches for the pumpkin, only to be engulfed entirely by its vastness, vanishing from sight for about 20 seconds.

Now that the officer is gone, the Jack-O-Lantern – its crooked teeth forming a broad smile – charges toward the halted cruiser, its massive green stem pressing against the windshield while the pumpkin glows ominously in the car’s headlights.

“Oh yeah, I see it,” a backup officer says through the radios – audible in the footage – as the first officer grins, head down. The backup officer adds: “Where do you want me?”

A police SUV drives toward the scene, and the pumpkin rolls straight into it, colliding with the vehicle.

An officer arrives to assist the first cop at the scene, and the pumpkin quickly shoves both officers back toward the vehicle.

Eventually, the two officers adjusted their approach, circling the pumpkin’s substantial size and teaming up with a civilian who, unseen by the camera, started tugging at the pumpkin’s loose strings.

It takes a whole minute for the two officers and the civilian to carefully move the pumpkin from the road to a nearby grassy area.

“Luckily, no officers (or pumpkins) were harmed during the event,” police said in a statement, after the pumpkin was secured.

Authorities confirmed that the Great Pumpkin is back with its rightful owner.
