Officials say that the body of a Canadian climber who went missing in November has been found in the Adirondack Mountains.
New York State Police said in a statement that Leo DuFour’s body parts were found on Mt. Adams Trail in Allen Mountain in Essex County on the morning of May 10.
State police say DuFour, a 23-year-old man from a suburb near Montreal, went to Newcomb in late November to walk the Mt. Allen Trail. The trail is called a “challenging route” by AllTrails, and it normally takes about 9 hours to finish.
“State Police, New York State Forest Rangers, and the Essex County Coroner responded to the scene,” officials said.
Someone from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation told PEOPLE, “The DEC family sends our deepest condolences to the DuFour family on their loss.” Then they said, “Thank you to our dedicated Forest Rangers for their tireless efforts during the ongoing and active search effort over the last few months.”
State police said they began their search for DuFour after he was reported missing on November 30, 2024. DuFour was about 5’7″ tall and weighed about 150 pounds. He wore a black coat, pants, a black bag, and a tan winter hat the last time he was seen.
At this point, it’s not clear what killed him or where he went.
Several search teams looked for the lost man on the 4,340-foot peak. In December, his snow-covered car was found on the nearby Mt. Adams Trail, according to ABC affiliate WTEN.
It took days of searching over almost 400 miles of rough terrain in bad weather after the body was found.
It was eight days after he was last seen that the search for DuFour turned into a rescue operation, according to WTEN. In December, officials had to stop looking for DuFour because it was too cold and there were whiteouts.
The Department of Environmental Conservation in New York State said that the search began again “this spring as the snow melted across the Adirondack backcountry.”
