Police Report Multiple Suspects Involved In Deadly Subway Altercation In New York City, Leaving One Person Dead And Five Others Injured

New York City: According to the latest update from the New York City police, they have now determined that there were three shooters involved in a tragic incident on a rush-hour subway car. However, as of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests have been made in connection with the gunfire that occurred the previous day, resulting in one fatality and five injuries.

Gunfire broke out shortly before 5 p.m. on Monday at an elevated Bronx subway station, coinciding with the arrival of a train. During the mayor’s weekly news conference, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny revealed that a total of 19 shell casings were found, with three of them discovered inside a subway car.

“As the train arrives at the station … a shot is fired inside the train car,” Kenny reported. “There is a situation where a train is full of passengers, arriving at a platform that is already filled with people. Suddenly, a gunshot is heard, causing everyone to panic and rush to exit the platform.”

Kenny mentioned that investigators have made progress in identifying one of the suspected shooters, while they continue their efforts to identify the remaining two individuals involved. According to reports, individuals believed to be affiliated with rival gangs boarded the subway at separate stations and coincidentally ended up on the same train.

Earlier today, the police released photographs of two individuals who were allegedly involved in the incident and fled the scene.

Kenny mentioned that first responders discovered three of the shooting victims on the elevated subway platform and two additional victims on the street below. Another individual made their way to a nearby hospital.

A 35-year-old man tragically lost his life due to a gunshot wound to the chest, according to Kenny. On Tuesday, authorities revealed the identity of the individual as Obed Beltran-Sanchez.

According to authorities, the remaining five victims, who span a range of ages, are expected to make a full recovery from their gunshot injuries. Four individuals, including two teenage boys, one teenage girl, and a 71-year-old, sustained gunshot wounds to their extremities. A 29-year-old woman sustained gunshot wounds to her face and neck.

Crime rates in New York City have seen a decline since the COVID-19 pandemic, with a notable decrease in killings on the subway system, which caters to over 3 million daily riders. However, the occurrence of infrequent but tragic incidents of shootings and assaults on the subway can cause unease among residents.

“We are committed to resolving this incident and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable,” stated Mayor Eric Adams.
