Police Officer Accused of Molesting Woman in Custody in Chicago, Relieved from his Duties by Department

Chicago, IL: A Chicago police officer has been accused of molesting a woman in detention at a River North neighborhood police station. The incident happened in May last year.

The officer is identified as 32-year-old Stephan Shaw. He is accused of one count of official misconduct and two counts of custodial sexual misconduct.

The charges have resulted in his removal from his police duties. On Tuesday, during his initial court appearance, a magistrate ordered his release from custody. The judge also ordered him to refrain from any form of communication with the victim or her family.

Shaw, according to Cook County prosecutors, was among the officers who apprehended a woman on May 22, 2023, for theft.

Shaw approached the entrance of her detention cell at the Near North District police station, where the woman was held in custody. He proceeded to make a series of  remarks regarding her bottom and inquired whether she would consent to his “hitting it.”

He then spanked the woman, after which he groped her over her clothing before inappropriately touching her while inserting his hand into her shorts and having her position her hand on his pelvic region.

Shaw looked for her on Facebook before her release from custody. When she subsequently contacted him to inquire about her upcoming court date, he suggested they meet for pizza.

The woman disclosed the incident to her mother, who filed a police report as reported by CBS News.

Following an investigation, Shaw was apprehended and he is relieved from his duties. Additionally, he was mandated to hand over his firearms to the Chicago Police Headquarters.

He could spend up to five years in prison if convicted.
