Pit Bull and Mixed-Breed Dogs to Be Euthanized After Fatal Attack on Boy; Owner Slapped with Charges

Honk News (, FL) – A modest tribute stands just beyond the entrance of the Berry’s Ridge community.

A tribute has been organized by family and friends in memory of 8-year-old Michael Millett, who was tragically attacked by two dogs on Monday.

Authorities apprehended the pit bull and mixed-breed dog following the incident. According to Animal Services director Angela Miedema, the two are currently under their care.

“They do not leave the kennel,” said Miedema. “They do not get physically handled. That is for our safety. That’s for the staff’s safety in general. And that’s so that we can maintain that they are fed, watered appropriately.”

Both individuals are currently undergoing a required 10-day isolation period. The county has not received authorization from the owner to proceed with euthanasia.

“If she never does and she never contacts us, at the end of 10 days, they will still be euthanized,” said Miedema.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood stated that these dogs frequently roamed freely and instilled fear in the community, yet no one reported the incidents, complicating their efforts to establish a case.

Miedema urges community members to notify authorities about any animals wandering freely.

“They can receive citations,” she added. “Their animal can be brought to their shelter. So, those are some of the different outcomes that may occur. And we do have mandatory spay/neuter that may occur.”

It’s best to keep your distance from any unfamiliar animals you encounter.

“Any animal has the potential to bite. Any animal with teeth has the potential to cause injuries.”

While no charges have been filed yet, the Sheriff’s Office is actively pursuing the investigation. He wishes for the dog owner to face charges of negligent manslaughter, at the very least.
