One Person Injured in Early Morning Single-Vehicle Crash Near Westby

WESTBY, Wis. — The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single-vehicle crash that left one person injured early Monday morning on Coon Prairie Road in rural Westby.

Early Morning Crash Reported in Viroqua Township

Sheriff Roy Torgerson said the crash was reported to the 911 Dispatch Center around 2 a.m. on December 22, 2025. According to the report, a passerby called authorities after spotting a vehicle off the roadway and a person lying on the ground nearby in the Town of Viroqua, several miles south of Westby.

Deputies and first responders arrived at the scene shortly after the call. The vehicle, which appeared to have lost control on a rural stretch of road, had come to rest off the shoulder with visible front-end damage. The injured person was found outside the vehicle.

Injured Person Transported for Medical Treatment

The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was transported to Vernon Health hospital by La Farge Area Ambulance Service for medical evaluation and treatment. The extent of their injuries remains undisclosed at this time, but officials confirmed the individual was conscious and responsive when paramedics arrived.

Multi-Agency Response

In addition to deputies, several emergency agencies responded to assist at the scene, including the Westby Police Department, Viroqua Fire Department, and Westby EMS. The roadway remained partially blocked for a short period while crews worked to secure the area and remove the damaged vehicle.

Investigation Continues

Authorities say it is unclear what caused the vehicle to leave the road, but factors such as road conditions, speed, or driver fatigue are being considered. Sheriff Torgerson noted that the crash occurred on a dark, rural stretch of Coon Prairie Road, which can be challenging to navigate, especially during early morning hours when temperatures drop and frost or black ice can form. The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash and expects to release additional details later today.

Residents in the area are reminded to use caution when traveling on rural roads during winter mornings, as freezing conditions can quickly make surfaces slick and hazardous. Stay with HonkNews.com for the latest updates as more information becomes available from local authorities.
