ALLEGAN COUNTY, Mich. — A tragic head-on collision in Overisel Township left one person dead and four others injured Thursday afternoon, according to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO). Deputies believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the deadly crash.
Crash Details
Authorities said the collision happened around 1:30 p.m. on 142nd Avenue near 41st Street, just west of the intersection. When deputies arrived, they discovered that a pickup truck and a passenger car had collided head-on, causing severe damage to both vehicles.
The front-seat passenger of the car was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies confirmed. The driver of the car sustained minor injuries, while two passengers in the back seat were transported to nearby hospitals.
A female passenger remains in critical condition, and a 14-month-old child is listed in stable condition, ACSO reported.
The driver of the pickup truck was not injured, though a female passenger in the truck was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Alcohol Believed to Be Involved
Preliminary findings from investigators suggest that the westbound passenger car lost control and crossed the center line, colliding head-on with the eastbound pickup truck.
“Alcohol is believed to be a factor at this time,” the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Our accident reconstruction team continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.”
Deputies are withholding the identities of those involved pending notification of family members.
Investigation Underway
The Allegan County Accident Reconstruction Team spent several hours at the crash site gathering evidence and reconstructing the sequence of events. The roadway was temporarily closed while crews worked to clear the wreckage.
Authorities urge drivers to avoid impaired driving and to report suspected drunk drivers by calling 911.
“This is another painful reminder of how devastating impaired driving can be,” an ACSO spokesperson said. “Lives can change in an instant.”
