One Dead, Four Hospitalized After Head-On Collision on Route 22 in Westmoreland County

MURRYSVILLE, Pa. – A fatal head-on collision on Route 22 in Murrysville early Thursday morning left one man dead and four others hospitalized, according to local authorities.

The crash occurred shortly before 6:30 a.m. near Buena Vista Drive in the westbound lanes of Route 22, prompting an emergency response that temporarily shut down part of the busy roadway.

Fatal Morning Crash

Emergency crews arrived at the scene to find two vehicles heavily damaged following a head-on impact. Officials confirmed that 72-year-old John Howard was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four additional victims were transported to Forbes Hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet released their names or the extent of their injuries.

“It was a severe impact. First responders did everything possible to assist those involved,” one Murrysville emergency responder said at the scene.

Investigation Underway

Police have not yet determined what caused the crash, but early reports indicate that one of the vehicles may have crossed into oncoming lanes. Investigators are examining road conditions, possible driver impairment, and other contributing factors.

Traffic in the area was restricted for several hours Thursday morning while police reconstructed the crash and cleared debris from the roadway. Commuters faced delays throughout the morning rush hour.

The Murrysville Police Department and Westmoreland County Crash Reconstruction Unit are continuing to investigate. Authorities have not yet said whether any charges will be filed.

Community Reaction

Local residents say the stretch of Route 22 where the crash occurred is known for heavy morning traffic and frequent collisions.

“People drive too fast through here, especially during rush hour,” said Nancy Porter, a nearby resident. “You hear about accidents on this part of Route 22 all the time.”

Others have called for additional safety measures, including reduced speed limits and improved signage.

Ongoing Safety Concerns on Route 22

Route 22, which connects Murrysville and Monroeville, is a heavily traveled corridor often used by commuters heading into the Pittsburgh area. Over the past year, several serious accidents have been reported along this same section of highway.

Local officials say they are working with PennDOT to evaluate possible road safety improvements aimed at preventing similar tragedies.

“This is a busy, high-speed stretch of roadway with a lot of crossover traffic,” one traffic investigator said. “We’re looking closely at what may have led to this crash.”

As of Thursday evening, the westbound lanes of Route 22 have been reopened to traffic, but police continue to urge drivers to use caution in the area.
