A North Carolina woman was arrested in connection with the death of a 16-month-old infant at a daycare center.
Alexandra Coffey, 29, is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of the girl.
Officers from the Lenoir Police Department were dispatched to Creative Beginnings just before 3 p.m. on Monday, May 19, in response to a complaint of an infant in cardiac arrest.
When authorities and emergency responders arrived, they found the infant unresponsive. After life-saving procedures were implemented, the girl was transported to Caldwell UNC Healthcare, where she died.
Two days later, on May 21, police arrested Coffey, a daycare employee, “for her involvement in the child’s death,” according to a police press statement.
The infant’s mother told WBTV that it was her daughter’s first day in daycare, and she received a call from the daycare informing her that her daughter had not woken up from her nap.
According to WCNC, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services suspended Creative Beginnings’ license and ordered the facility to close the same day the arrest occurred.
Coffey was brought into custody and later freed on a $500,000 bond.
