Officials say a 3-year-old was driving the truck in California that killed a child

In a heartrending event that has shocked a California community, a 2-year-old child was fatally struck by a truck operated, shockingly, by a 3-year-old at a gas station in Woodland, a suburb of Sacramento, officials reported. The incident occurred on Saturday just before 3:46 p.m. at the local 76 gas station on West Street, sparking widespread concern and sorrow.

Preliminary findings from the Woodland Police Department reveal a series of unfortunate events leading to the tragedy. A man, presumed to be the guardian of the children, parked the truck at a gas pump and left the engine running as he entered the station’s store. During this time, the 3-year-old managed to move from the back seat, where the child had been secured in a child seat, to the front, subsequently finding themselves in the driver’s seat.

The situation quickly escalated when the truck, under the inadvertent control of the young child, began to move forward. Tragically, it collided with the 2-year-old who was near a taco stand located at the edge of the parking lot, according to the police’s statement.

In a desperate bid for aid, family members rushed the injured toddler to a nearby hospital, where, despite medical efforts, the child succumbed to the injuries sustained in the collision.

As the community grapples with this devastating occurrence, the Woodland Police Department has assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway.

This includes gathering witness testimonies and reviewing surveillance video footage from the scene. Although no arrests have been made as of now, all parties involved are cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.

The incident has left the local and wider community in mourning, prompting discussions on vehicle safety and the importance of vigilance when children are near operational vehicles. The Woodland Police Department’s inquiries are ongoing, and they have yet to release additional comments on the matter.

This tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictable nature of accidents and the critical need for constant supervision of young children in environments where vehicles are present. Our thoughts are with the families affected during this profoundly difficult time.
