Officials have reported the discovery of a mummified body located on a toilet within a California residence during their search for a missing woman this summer.
Officers discovered a man’s deceased body at a residence on Appian Way in August during their search for a woman who had been reported missing.
A family member requested the officers to check the home while they were searching for a missing 95-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s disease.
According to reports, the woman had relocated to a senior home two years earlier and was not present in the house. Authorities discovered the mummified remains of a man in a bathroom.
Officials referred to the body as “mummified” due to its dried appearance upon their arrival.
A deceased man is thought to be the son of a 95-year-old woman. Officials think he passed away from natural causes, with no signs of foul play detected.
“It’s really strangely common for us to find people in the restroom,” UCPD Sergeant Brandon Hayward said.
A second man was discovered in the residence, showing signs of mental illness, with mold visibly growing from one of his ears. He is thought to be the sibling of the deceased.
Officers responding to the scene discovered the property filled with trash and a significant number of flies inside the home, accompanied by an unpleasant odor.
“The backyard and the front yard was filled with trash,” said neighbor Bruce Chan. “It was piled up to 10 feet high or so with trash. We always wondered about it because the place always seemed really creepy.”
Union City Police Lt. Sergio Quintero has confirmed to the Times that the investigation is still in progress.
