DELTONA, Fla. – An off-duty Volusia County sheriff’s deputy was detained on Saturday night for riding a motorbike with a phony license plate and has since resigned, according to authorities.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, 26-year-old Erica Muzzy was arrested on Interstate 4 and charged with possessing a fraudulent license plate.
Muzzy was riding a motorbike on I-4 West in Deltona shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday, with a flipped-up tag that was not visible, according to deputies. When flipped down, the tag purportedly said “CHASEM3.”
Muzzy was pulled over and then booked into the Volusia County Jail on a $2,500 bond.
Deputies claimed Muzzy was involved in an incident just before 9 p.m. in Deltona.
The sheriff’s office said one of its deputies saw a motorcycle rider at a Wawa at 3400 Howland Boulevard who had fled an attempted traffic check earlier Saturday evening.
While held, the rider cried out to Muzzy, who was with his group of riders, and became agitated with the deputy conducting the investigation.
That motorcyclist was detained on suspicion of evading or attempting to avoid police enforcement. His identity was not immediately revealed.
Following his arrest, authorities stated that Muzzy elected to depart the Wawa on her Harley with a bogus tag rather than having it towed or obtaining a ride home.
Following Muzzy’s arrest, the sheriff’s office said it discovered a social media account related with her that included hazardous stunt riding on public roadways.
Authorities are currently investigating the behavior as part of an internal probe.
Muzzy had served as a deputy since 2021, most recently in District 2, which includes DeLand and northwest Volusia.
