North Dakota Childcare Worker Slammed Child on Ground; Faces Charges as Mother Says She was not Told about the Violent Incident

A childcare provider in Grand Forks faces serious felony charges related to the abuse of a child under the age of six.

On Tuesday, October 15, an incident took place at Hopeful Beginnings located in the Grand Cities Mall (1601 17th Avenue South).

Court documents reveal that a 22-year-old named Jarae Grad was recorded on video forcefully throwing a child to the ground. In the legal filings, she expresses to investigators that she felt “frustrated and mad.”

Another staff member captured the footage, stating to authorities, as per court records, that Grad was burping the infant “and she felt the force appeared to be excessive,” prompting her to begin recording.

The footage reportedly shows Grad “holding and thrusting (the child) up and away from Grad, and violently pulling the child back.”

The footage depicts Grad lifting the child off the ground and then forcefully bringing her down, resulting in her legs being thrown back and her lower body making contact with the ground.

Legal filings indicate A graduate informed authorities that she “threw and dropped the child down” in an attempt to silence her cries.

According to the court documents, Sarah Schindler, the daycare director, stated that she was not informed about the alleged assault until two days later, on October 17. According to court documents, the mother of the child informed police that she only learned about the incident on October 18th.

A recent after-care report indicates that the child is experiencing ear drainage, increased irritability, fatigue, and a reduced appetite.

Grad appeared in court for the first time on Monday, October 21. She is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing in December.
