Lawrence Taylor, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, handed himself in to a Florida jail on Wednesday and was charged with sex offenses stemming from an incident earlier this month, according to court records.
Taylor was charged with sex offender failure to comply with the law, a third-degree crime, following an incident in Broward County on July 2.
TMZ Sports was the first to uncover Taylor’s legal troubles. The 65-year-old former New York Giants standout linebacker was freed from jail early Thursday.
“My client, Lawrence Taylor, will be pleading ‘not guilty’ to the recent charges,” Taylor’s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, told TMZ. “As in the earlier incident involving the identical charges, Mr. Taylor did not intend to commit any criminal offense.
“This case involves a significant misunderstanding. We are convinced that once the prosecutors evaluate the exculpatory evidence proving Mr. Taylor’s innocence, he will again receive a favorable decision.”
TMZ stated that the accusation stemmed from allegedly neglecting to record a name or address change.
Taylor pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct and hiring a prostitute in 2011, after being accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl, according to the New York Post. Taylor stated that at the time, the girl informed him that she was 19.
Taylor was arrested in 2021 for failing to disclose an address change, which is similar to this arrest. His counsel at the time referred to it as a “mix-up.” He pleaded no contest to “residency restriction for persons convicted of certain sex offenses,” according to TMZ.
Taylor, 65, played with the Giants from 1981 to 1993.
