Needle Exchange Facility Will Continue After Lawsuit Settled in New Jersey

Jersey City, NJ: An ongoing needle exchange program in Atlantic City will continue to operate following a recent agreement with city officials. The South Jersey AIDS Alliance operates Oasis, a harm reduction center located near the popular boardwalk and casinos of the resort.

In 2021, the city council attempted to close down the center that provides support for individuals dealing with substance abuse challenges. In response, the Alliance filed a lawsuit against the city.

According to Georgett Shelton, the president and CEO of South Jersey AIDS Alliance, the settlement is expected to pave the way for the opening of more harm reduction centers in New Jersey. According to her, safeguarding public health is of utmost importance.

“Our organization offers a harm reduction center where we distribute Narcan and clean syringes,” Shelton explained. “In addition to our comprehensive case management services, we provide nursing services for HIV testing, hepatitis C testing, and STI testing.”
