ANAHEIM, Calif. — A red sedan crashed into a group of Anaheim High School students Wednesday afternoon, injuring at least eight teenagers — three of them critically — according to Anaheim police.
Crash Details
The incident occurred just before 3 p.m. at the intersection of North Street and Harbor Boulevard, where members of the school’s running club were waiting at a crosswalk for the light to turn green.
Witnesses and police say the driver of the red sedan suddenly swerved onto the sidewalk and plowed into the group.
“I don’t know, he just lost control of the car — didn’t stop. He was just going. He just crashed the light,” said one member of the running club who witnessed the collision.
Victims and Injuries
Police confirmed that at least eight students were struck by the vehicle. Emergency crews arrived quickly, treating victims at the scene before transporting several to nearby hospitals.
Authorities said three of the teenagers are in critical condition, while others sustained moderate to minor injuries. The driver, whose name has not been released, was also taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Driver Possibly Impaired
Investigators believe the driver may have been under the influence at the time of the crash. The cause of the incident remains under investigation, and charges are expected pending toxicology results.
“It’s really bad. There’s a few kids laying, bleeding. You can tell that they’re badly injured. It’s sad,” said Sonia Chavez, a nearby resident who witnessed the aftermath.
School Response
In a statement, Anaheim High School officials confirmed that counseling and support services will be available for students, staff, and families affected by the tragedy.
The intersection remained closed for several hours as Anaheim Police conducted their investigation and cleared the scene.
