An MTA worker has been apprehended for reportedly fabricating an incident of assault on the subway.
A worker named Henry Herring reported an incident that occurred at the Jamaica-179th Street station in Queens. According to Herring, he was cleaning a stationary F train around 4 a.m. on Wednesday when he became involved in an argument with another individual. Herring reported that he was attacked by another person who cut his hands before fleeing the scene.
An employee was treated at a local hospital and later released, according to the Transport Workers Union.

After a thorough investigation, the police concluded that Herring had fabricated the incident. Before his arrest for filing a false police report, the MTA suspended him without pay.
The MTA said in a statement Saturday, “Assaults on MTA employees are a real issue and the NYPD has made real progress identifying and capturing perpetrators. What’s alleged in this case is beyond disappointing, pulling resources from investigations of actual crimes, while undermining confidence in the safety of the transit system.”
Herring has worked as a cleaner for the transit authority since early 2023.
