Mount Victoria Tunnel in Wellington Reopens After Two-Car Crash

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — The Mount Victoria Tunnel has reopened after a two-car crash temporarily closed the southbound lane on State Highway 1 Monday afternoon, according to the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).

Crash and Response

Police were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m. after reports of a collision near the entrance to the tunnel. Emergency services arrived shortly after to assist those involved and manage traffic flow through the area.

A police spokesperson confirmed that one person sustained minor injuries in the crash. No serious injuries were reported.

By 3:30 p.m., NZTA said emergency crews and contractors were on-site, with a tow truck dispatched to clear the damaged vehicles. The tunnel was fully reopened shortly after the scene was cleared.

Traffic Restored

The crash caused temporary delays for motorists traveling through central Wellington as crews worked to remove debris and ensure the tunnel’s safety. Traffic has since returned to normal in both directions.

Authorities are reminding drivers to remain cautious and allow for extra travel time in case of unexpected road incidents in the busy corridor.
