Mother Devastated as Son Declared Brain Dead after Alleged Metal Bat Attack by Stepfather in Connecticut; 6-year-old on Life Support

A man from Connecticut faces serious allegations following a violent incident involving his two young stepsons and his wife, which has tragically resulted in the brain death of her 6-year-old child.

Abdulrahim Sulaiman, 38, from Bridgeport, is facing multiple charges, including three counts of attempted murder, according to online court records.

Jathan Escobar, 6, is currently on life support and has been pronounced brain-dead following the attack, according to information shared by his family with local news source WFSB.

A miracle is what they seek through their prayers. “He was always filled with joy,” Sasha Heron, Jathan’s cousin, shared with WFSB.

On Wednesday, Sept. 23, shortly before 10 a.m., a woman urgently contacted 911, pleading for assistance.

“Please help us.” she cried into the phone, with loud banging echoing in the background, as detailed in an incident report acquired by PEOPLE. “He’s hitting us with a bat!”

Shortly after, Sulaiman is reportedly seen on surveillance footage “jumping out of an upper window and landing headfirst into a garbage dumpster,” before brandishing the bat, according to the report.

A report claims that an officer observed Sulaiman “muttering to himself” while having blood on his hands and arms, leading to his arrest.

Within the confines of the apartment, a woman, injured and with a wound near her eye, held Jathan, who was also losing a significant amount of blood.

During the attempt to revive Jathan, officers reportedly observed noticeable “brain matter” in an opening on the crown of his head, according to the allegations in the report.

The mother and her two sons were quickly taken to nearby hospitals. The two boys were subsequently transported by helicopter to the pediatric emergency center at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven.

Jathan’s 4-year-old brother is now in stable condition and is anticipated to recover.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Craig Nowak, the chances of this individual surviving are nearly nonexistent, as reported by local station Fox 61.

Sulaiman faces serious legal troubles, including multiple counts of first-degree assault, charges related to endangering a child, and illegal possession of a firearm.

He is confronting distinct allegations for reportedly assaulting a judicial marshal and expectorating blood on another, as per court documents.

He remains in custody with a bond set at $10 million.

Jathan is currently in critical condition at a local hospital, according to Tiadora Josef, the Director of Public Information for the City of Bridgeport, in an email to PEOPLE.
